“...with the CDC reporting a 31% increase in mental-health-related emergency room visits from the beginning of the shutdown (Sparks, 2020).”
This senior class has been struggling as a whole, and many students are at risk of not graduating. The pandemic has added additional stress to students in their personal, social, and academic life. A lot of students are home alone for most of the day, isolated and lonely. This in turn makes it harder for students to want to complete work and stay in school. We went from being around hundreds of students every day and teachers we know care for us to being completely alone at home, and for those of us who lack a supportive care system at home, this has been even harder. By creating a study group and offering additional support for students, I have been able to help students get back on track and help alleviate some of their stress. I have created an environment where students can hear and see their peers again, while helping each other get back on track in school. When working with them 1-1, I provide them the comfort of knowing that they are not alone in their struggle and can get everything done, just with a little extra help.
